Preventative Care

At Katy Pet Wellness Solutions, we believe that preventative care is at the core of health. Through vaccinations, routine screenings, and parasite preventatives, pets can stay free of some of the most common causes of ailments.

Vaccinations help the immune system stay strong and prevent some of the most common diseases in dogs and cats. We recommend that all dogs stay current on vaccines for rabies, distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and bordetella. We also offer several lifestyle vaccines that may be recommended depending on your individual circumstances including lyme, bivalent influenza, and rattlesnake. We recommend that all cats stay current on vaccines for rabies, rhinotracheitis, Chlamydia, panleukopenia, calicivirus, and leukemia. Puppies and kittens can receive their first vaccinations at 6 weeks of age and receive a series of boosters and vaccinations until after 20 weeks of age.

Wellness screenings to test for heartworm disease, intestinal parasites, and organ function help monitor your pet’s overall condition and ensure they stay healthy. Young pets need these screenings every year as long as they stay on their regular preventatives and are otherwise healthy. Older pets, pets with chronic illnesses, or those that have missed some preventative medications may need screenings more frequently. We will make specific recommendations for your pet based on their age and overall health status.

Preventative medications for heartworm disease prevention, intestinal parasite control, and flea control are needed by all dogs and cats. Our local environment is ideal for mosquitoes and fleas. Our temperatures typically do not drop low enough for long enough to have a significant effect on parasite populations making year round prevention and control necessary. Indoor pets are at a lower risk, however, mosquitoes and fleas can still enter the home with family members going in and out and exposure to intestinal parasites is still possible, so even indoor pets need prevention all year long. To monitor effectiveness of preventatives and ensure nothing is missed, heartworm tests and fecal tests are run every 6-12 months or more frequently if needed.
